Looking to replace an existing tile?

If you have a damaged tile to replace and the floor is more than five years old, it can be difficult to find a replacement tile. Perhaps the previous home owner purchased them originally, not you. Even more difficult.

Just remember "difficult not impossible".

First establish what information you have.

  • Are there any leftover boxes with manufactures markings on them?

  • Do you know who the original builder was?

  • Old tax invoices from the original purchase?
Start by taking a picture of the tile. Then begin your search.

  1. Builder.

The first step is to search for records on the construction of the home to identify the builder. Then make enquiries as to the tile supplier. Often builders will only give you a list of which shop supplies them. In this situation, approach each shop with the photo you took.

  2. Google

If you can identify the manufacture, but don't know which shop sells these tiles, then google the factory name, get in touch with them by email and ask for the West Australian supplier for your tiles? Often you will get a response very quickly. With the name available contact the shop and send them a photo of your tile.

Also consider eastern states companies too. Freight is relatively cheap from Sydney.

  3. Library

Should the tile shop not have any tiles left, or it may be discontinued, your only other hope is The Tile Library in Osborne Park.

Replacing a tile can be very time consuming and must be weighed up against completely retiling the room. For this reason, when purchasing tiles always make sure you have tiles left over (in a boxes), and store them in a dry place.
